Course Summary

This training is designed for mental health professionals seeking to integrate expressive and somatic approaches into their clinical practice, particularly when working with clients who have experienced trauma. Given the complex impact of trauma on the nervous system, creative interventions can play a vital role in fostering safety, containment, and emotional regulation. Art-making offers a nonverbal, embodied pathway for clients to process their experiences at a pace that feels manageable and empowering.
Participants will explore a range of expressive modalities—such as visual art, movement, and guided imagery—while deepening their understanding of the body's role in trauma recovery. Emphasis will be placed on somatic awareness, the mind-body connection, and the application of polyvagal theory to support nervous system regulation. Through this integration of artistic expression and somatic practices, clinicians will gain tools to support clients in reconnecting with their inner resilience and cultivating a deeper sense of safety and embodiment in the healing process.

Learning Objectives

  1. Differentiate between various expressive modalities, art materials, and creative interventions to effectively enhance therapeutic practice.
  2. Recognize and articulate the relationship between art-based expression and the mind-body connection within the therapeutic setting.
  3. Engage in and apply at least three new art-based interventions to support client growth and self-expression in therapy.
  4. Develop and demonstrate the ability to integrate expressive modalities into a trauma-informed therapeutic framework.
